About this project
A 12 x 12 inch beach scene built up in texture on a canvas board - a layered blue ocean, raised white waves, a sandy shore made with real sand, and real seashells in one corner. No resin is used, so it is a calm, beginner-friendly project. You paint the sea in three shades of blue, spread a sand and texture paste mix for the beach, press the shells in while it is soft, then sculpt the waves and foam with a palette knife. Time: about 3-5 hours of making, plus 12-24 hours of drying flat, so plan it over two days. Level: beginner. From your home you will also need: a plate to mix paint on, a jar of water, an old cloth or tissues, a pencil, newspaper to cover the table, a spoon for the sand and, optionally, cling film for the lace foam effect. Tips: use small amounts of texture paste at a time, uneven waves look more real than neat ones, and clean your knives and brush before the paste dries on them. Every handmade piece comes out a little different from the photo - the waves are usually chunkier, and that is the charm of it.
