About this project
The word PEACE in string art: five letters, each in its own colour of thread, criss-crossed around nails on a solid 18 x 8 inch pine board. A full-size printed template shows where every nail goes, so there is nothing to measure or draw. Finished size: 45.7 x 20.3 cm. Time: 4-5 hours of making. It works best over two days - nails one day, string the next. Level: beginner. You will also need, and these are not in the box: about 201 nails of 25 mm (have a few spare), a small hammer, a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper and masking tape. From around the house: scissors, a ruler, an old cloth, a clothes peg or a comb to hold nails, tweezers, pliers if you have them, and clear nail polish or a drop of glue for the knots. The photo shows a dark-stained board. Yours is natural pine - light and fresh, and the five colours stand out even more on it. Handmade string art also looks a little less perfect than the photo: some nails lean and some threads cross thicker than others. That is the charm of it. Tips: keep the hammer taps light, because pine dents if you miss. If a nail bends, pull it out, move 2-3 mm and use a fresh one. If a letter looks thin, add more criss-cross passes - it is the one thing you can always add later.
